Recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day - in Family Teams

To mark National Indigenous Peoples Day (Jun 21st) we brought students and teachers together in our Family Teams for a final gathering of school year.  We talked about the importance of oral history within Indigenous Cultures and the role of story keepers.  Mme. Henderson lead us in the activity which included listening to an Indigenous story from the Puget Sound, just south of the Salish Sea and Richmond:

We spend time reflecting on the learning from the story in our multi-age teams.  Each student had an opportunity to share their thoughts and understanding.  We then took time to just be together and have some outside play time with students and staff together.

As we continue to focus on belonging and building our community we are also beginning to turn our attention to our school wide literacy proficiency.  This activity was a nice combination of our existing focus with the blending of our new focus.  September will provide us with an opportunity to complete a school wide literacy assessment to help guide our planned professional development work with Faye Brownlie and our next steps with the students.
