School Wide Literacy Assessment and What's Next for Literacy Learning
| What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus? | We completed school wide-literacy assessments from Kindergarten to Grade 7 (SPARK and RFRA). This data will help us identify needs and areas for continued focus while showing us the areas in which our instructional practices are making a difference. Classroom teachers collaborated with our District Literacy Consultant to develop their literacy instructional routines. |
| What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen? | We wanted to know what the current levels of Literacy Proficiency were in both English and French Immersion Classrooms. It was important to have data for individual students to address their needs and collective data to see school wide trends. Where we making a difference with our current practices, what was improving, where were the gaps remaining. |
| What does the evidence tell us so far? | Our SPARK and RFRA data suggests that we are making progress in our Literacy Skills. • A greater number of our K and 1s are completing at least part of the assessment: from 71% in the Fall to 87% in the Spring • Grade 2-7 students Retelling and Summarizing skills saw the percentage of Emergent Proficiency improve from 20% to 6%. |
| To what extent are the actions making a difference? | While we are able to identify some specific areas of improvement, the feeling amongst staff is overwhelmingly to continue our Literacy Focus. The RFRA data from our Spring Assessment shows that less than 60% of our students are at least proficient with their Reading Comprehension Skills. |
| How will we move forward accordingly? | We will continue to connect/collaborate with our District Literacy Consultant. Staff changes at all grade levels and in both language programs are significant and we want to support incoming teachers as needed. We want to continue to address individual/small group needs with Emergent Literacy Skills specifically and generally increase the literacy skills of all students. |
