Reading Skill Focus, Assessment and Response to Intervention
In the Spring of 2025 the staff began to engage in conversation about where we felt the greatest needs for learning were across the school. From scanning classroom level data, the hunch was that Literacy and specifically reading proficiency was very likely the area of greatest need overall. We made a commitment to undertake a school wide reading assessment early in the new school year and to explore professional development opportunities to strengthen our collective ability to reflect on data collected and make instructional plans to address learning stretches with our students.
We conducted the Richmond Formative Reading Assessment for Grades 2-7 and completed the Ministry of Education's "SPARK" Assessment with Kindergarten and Grade 1.
We will be working in grade groups in Mid November to consider what our data reveals. With support from Faye Brownlie and our Teacher Consultant, Briana Adams teachers will have the opportunity to develop plans, undertake some intervention strategies and then reflect on those experiences.
Our goal is to develop clarity with respect to our school wide focus and recommit to a response to intervention process that will guide the classroom based literacy instruction across grade levels and language of instruction.
